ZOFRAN Pharmaceutical Litigation

The Law Offices of Frank N. Dardeno, LLP is now accepting cases on behalf of mothers and children who have suffered injury as a result of taking prescription drug Zofran (ondansetron) while pregnant. Women who have taken Zofran while pregnant and currently have a child with a birth defect are encouraged to contact the firm for a free consultation.

What is Zofran?

Zofran (ondansetron), sold by GlaxoSmithKline, is a commonly-prescribed oral anti-nausea drug that was initially developed for cancer patients suffering from severe nausea. However, the drug has also frequently been prescribed “off-label” to pregnant women to treat or prevent pregnancy-related nausea and vomiting (better known as “morning sickness”).

Zofran and Birth Defects

While Zofran has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in certain cases, it has not been approved for use by pregnant women. Several studies conducted by GlaxoSmithKline in the 1980s demonstrated that Zofran crossed the placenta in mammals.  More recently, additional studies have confirmed that Zofran passes through the human placenta in “significant amounts” and remains active in the fetus much longer than in the mother. Further large studies in 2013 and 2014 have demonstrated that women using Zofran while pregnant suffered a significantly higher incidence of fetal defects.  The most common Zofran birth defects that result from taking Zofran include, but are not limited to:

  • Ventricular Septal Defects (so-called “hole in the heart”)
  • Cleft Lip
  • Cleft Palate
  • Club Foot
  • Musculoskeletal deformities
  • Craniosynostosis
  • Fetal Growth Restriction
  • Heart Defects
  • Heart Murmur
  • Jaundice
  • Kidney Defects
  • Fetal death
